The Roane County Solid Waste Department

The recycling program for Roane County continues to grow. Almost all Roane County convenience centers have collection containers for cardboard, paper, plastic and metal, making it easy for residents to recycle. Also, recycling containers have been placed at some schools and businesses. Roane State Community College, Midtown Elementary, Midtown Vocational School, Harriman High School and Rockwood Middle School are participating in the program and we anticipate more schools to join the program in the future. All collection containers are brought to the Roane County Recycling Center located in Midtown, to be sorted and baled for shipping. There are seven (7) full-time and one (1) part-time County Solid Waste Department employees, along with the Michael Dunn Work Program, who assist in the recycling program process.

Roane County operates the main Recycling Center in Midtown and has 12 convenience centers located throughout the county. Three are Super Centers: Highway 58 South, Gallaher Road, and Orchard View. These locations have drop-off sites for electronics as well as all other recyclables. Orchard View will be using the solar compactor for cardboard recycling collection. Super Centers will be able to accept larger household items that usually have to be brought to the Roane County Recycling Center. The Post Oak convenience center is the only location set up for collection of oil-based and latex paints and stains. This service is only available on Tuesday of each week. Upgrades have recently been made to the Gallaher location and the Highway 58 South location. The Orchard View convenience center is currently being upgraded due to the anticipated traffic caused by the new Dyllis Springs Elementary School.

Used oil collection containers are placed at convenience centers throughout Roane County. The oil is pumped out of these containers and used in special heaters that provide heat for other county departments. The Roane County Animal Shelter, Highway Department, and the Recycling Center all use this type of heat. The amount of used oil collected keeps these departments warm all through the winter months while reducing utility costs.

Last year, all brush and wood brought into the Recycling Center was ground into mulch. The mulch program brought revenue in while saving money to dispose of the brush and wood at the landfill.

Future upgrades and usage for the landfill include a new design for the Recycling Center for safer access throughout the center allowing more room for recyclables and the entire recycling process. The Sheriff's Department has chosen an unused portion of the landfill for development of a training range. Recreational Air Craft Enthusiasts have also chosen an unused area of the landfill for flying Radio-Controlled Air Craft.

Household Hazardous  Waste Day is scheduled annually in the Spring. The event is held at the Roane County Recycling Center in Midtown. State vendors set up to accept all hazardous materials such as fluorescent light bulbs, pesticides, paint removers, etc. Please check the website periodically as an announcement will be posted when the next date is set.

We are proud of all our convenience centers and their operators. The County employs one full-time and 25 part-time people to staff the convenience centers.

Roane County residents are always welcome to contact the Roane County Recycling Center in Midtown at 865/590-7779 with questions or concerns; however, information is regularly updated online at www.roanegov.org, then click on "Officials/Departments" and choose Roane County Solid Waste. Two power point presentations about the Roane County Solid Waste Department are available for view on that page also. The presentations contain the history and the present operations of the Recycling Center.
